Canine osteoarthritis is a degenerative form of acute arthritis. It can occur in any joint, but is often seen in the hip, the vertebrae and the leg joints. Over time, the joints deteriorate, making movement initially stiff, then painful.

Arthritis is an inflammation. This causes swelling and pain. The first sign you are likely to see is stiffness when walking or a reluctance to go on walks. Your dog may be slow in rising from lying, especially after a long rest.

Causes of arthritis can be from a former bone injury, from a poor diet, from veterinary medication or it can be a hereditary condition. Sometimes arthritis accompanies other diseases.

The veterinary treatment for canine osteoarthritis is with anti-inflammatory medicines. A different diet may also be suggested, especially if your dog is over weight. An over weight dog will always have more intense symptoms than one with a healthy weight, but losing weight won’t solve the problem.

Anti-inflammatory medicines will help to relieve the symptoms of the problem, but they do so at a price. All veterinary medicines are liver toxic and lower an already struggling immune system. This will make future disease resistance that much harder.

Your dog may also dislike taking the medicine, a sure sign that it is not helping him on a deep level.

Often the suggested new diet is a sideways move. Few commercial dog food is health enhancing. They are made with poor quality protein, diluted with high fat and low quality carbohydrates, then packed with chemicals in an effort to improve taste, texture, smell, colour, shelf life and nutrient loss.

A far better method of treating canine osteoarthritis, as with any disease, is to feed a quality, natural diet and to get natural treatment for all his ailments.

There is nothing better than a quality, natural diet made at home with love. This is neither expensive nor difficult to do. In fact, the price is often less than with many commercial dog foods. It does take a little more time than tipping kibble into a bowl, but very little more, once you are in the swing of it.

The best, the deepest, the most effective, and strangely, the most economical natural dogs health care comes from homeopathic treatment.

The combination of a good diet and quality homeopathic care are unbeatable for your dog’s long term health. Canine osteoarthrtitis included.
