Dog constipation, as in any other species, is a serious problem. What goes in must come out, otherwise it festers in the intestines, leading to serious problems in this area. It can also be a painful problem to have. By using a system of natural dogs health care, you can prevent constipation from occurring and/or treat an acute attack.

There are a variety of causes to constipation, some of them are included in the following list:
- diet
- dehydration
- ingestion of foreign object
- lack of exercise
- stress
- low immune system
Probably the first time you are aware of constipation in your dog is the ineffective urging to stool. Nothing may emerge, or small amounts may be the result. Often the result is small and hard. Sometimes a stool partially emerges, only to be withdrawn.
If the constipation continues, then pain may accompany the straining. This can also be separate from the straining. Your dog may lose his appetite. He may become bloated.
Acute attacks of constipation are little cause of concern, as long as they are short lived and do not cause pain. But recurring bouts or painful constipation needs attention.
The solutions are obvious if the constipation is caused by a lack of exercise, stress or dehydration. Make time to exercise your dog or find him a better home. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water available at all times and shelter in extreme weather conditions. De-stress yourself, as dogs are notorious for taking on the stress of the family. Be consistently kind and gentle to your dog, even when he does things you don’t want him to do. Check the links in the navigation bar above for gentle solutions to dog behaviour.
if your dog has ingested a foreign object, he may or may not need assistance. Dogs have amazing abilities to pass most things through their digestive tracts. Obviously this depends on what the object is and how large it is. But if it was a non-toxic object without sharp edges, it is likely that your dog will pass this out himself, in time. Just keep an eye on him. If he becomes restless and exhibits signs of pain, you may have to seek help.
The remaining areas that are a great cause of dog constipation is diet and a low immune system. A poor diet creates a malfunctioning immune system. Conversely, a good, nutritious diet stimulates an immune system to work efficiently.
The majority of dogs today are fed a commercial dog food. These are inherently of poor quality as the corporation manufacturing the food is more concerned about their profit than the health of your dog, despite the assurances on the pretty packets.
If you truly want a healthy dog, one who is immune to every disease and one who will be immune to chronic constipation, then you need to feed him a quality, natural diet. This is one of the most important aspects of natural dogs health care.
