The best diet for dogs needs to feed more than your dog. The gut microbiome also needs feeding. What is a microbiome? It just means an environment. So the gut microbiome is simply the environment of the gut, or digestive tract. The natural health of the stomach and the intestines are key in maintaining a healthy dog.

A healthy gut is teeming with tiny organisms, or microorganisms, by a huge factor. There are 10 times more bacteria cells in your dog (and you) than there are ordinary cells. There are also virus and fungi microorganisms. Collectively, this is called the microbiome. The microorganisms make up the environment.

They are critical in keeping your dog’s digestive tract healthy:

  • in aiding digestion
  • in supporting proper absorption of the nutrients
  • in the manufacture of vitamins

This vital and complex area is responsible for a healthy immune system. It is so vital to health, it is estimated that 90% of your dog’s (and yours) immune system lies in the gut.

This means what you feed your dog, and all your dog’s gut’s little friends, is key to their overall health.

If you feed your dog the same diet they evolved on, the gut will flourish. After all, this system has worked for eons.

However, if you feed your dog a commercial dog food, whatever the price, whoever sells it, whatever the claim made by whoever with letters after their name, however pretty the packet is, it is likely that this delicate balance of microorganisms will be upset. The food won’t be properly digested. Or absorbed. The vitamins won’t be made.

The typical commercial dog food is unnatural, full of refined and hydrolysed ‘foods’ which neither nourish your dog nor your dog’s little friends.

This unnatural gut environment is called dysbiosis.

In time, this leads to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colitis, diarrhoea, leaky gut and other gut health issues. A compromised immune system ensues.

The importance of feeding the best diet for dogs, that is the one they evolved on, cannot be over emphasised.

It’s not just the food that your dog ingests that upset this delicate balance of microorganisms. It’s also the drugs. Antibiotics do not discriminate the bacteria they kill. They can wipe out the entire microbiome. It can take years for the balance to naturally restore. Even when you add probiotics for dogs to the diet.

Anti-parasitics kill intestinal worms, but intestinal worms are also part of the beneficial gut microbiome. They just need to be in balance, which will automatically happen with the right diet. Just as they do in wild dogs.

Other drugs have the same effect, as do all synthetic substances – preservatives, flavours, colours, appetite enhancers… They are all unknown to the body. You could say they are toxibiotics. They are all toxic to the body, as are vaccines.

The glyphosate found in GM food upsets the link between the nutrient conversion and the body’s utilisation of it, in the pests they are targeting. The trouble is, this disruption is carried into those who consume the glyphosate – your dog.

When the delicate balance of the gut microbiome is disrupted, chronic inflammation ensues. This leads to chronic disease, such as organ dysfunction (thyroid, liver, kidney, heart), diabetes, arthritis, skin problems, allergies, low energy, weight gain, metabolic disorders, mood disorders.… In fact, every disease known and common in our modern world. The type will depend on your dog’s genetics. The cause is all the same.

The wrong dog food leads to an unhealthy mouth – gingivitis, stomatitis.

Does your dog have arthritis, cancer, hypothyroid, heart murmur, hot spots allergies, or any number of ‘treatable’ (at a price) diseases? Or do they just have dysbiosis?

Every disease comes down to a combination of the wrong diet and high toxicity. Throw in a little stress and hey presto, a dog with a veterinary termed ‘incurable disease’, who ends up being killed, because it’s the only ‘humane’ thing to do.

Yet, to reset the balance, to avoid the dreaded needle, even in ‘incurable’ dogs, all you need is:

  • to feed a natural, whole food, species-specific, balanced diet, which is a good dog food, a healthy dog food
  • to avoid the toxins, especially those in veterinary medicines

Almost all will recover to a lesser or greater degree.
