Dog health is on the decline. Chronic disease in dogs is at an all time high. Life expectancy is around eight years.
Eight years?
When not that long ago, it was common for dogs to live well into the late teens?
What changed?
Two things have changed - the diet and veterinary treatment.
Only a few decades ago, dogs were fed mostly table scraps, kitchen scraps and home made food. This was before the advent of junk and ultra processed food, when the diet of humans was more wholesome.
Then commercial dog food made an appearance. It was a good extra source of income for the food industry as they could now use what was previously waste, and make a profit.
Over the decades this situation has gone from bad to worse, as new chemicals are being used to add in lost nutrients from the processing, and the use of cheaper ingredients discarded as unsafe for human consumption.
No-one can be healthy when their diet is of poor quality and/or wrong for the species.
As dog health declined, there was a market for increased veterinary treatment.
They really go hand in hand as the dogs on home made dog food were rarely ill, so vets weren't needed much.
Industries and corporation, who are generally without morals or ethics, like to confuse people so they more readily accept thier version of reality.
Home made dog food was ridiculed as being 'unscientific', 'unbalanced', whereas the opposite was closer to the mark. The veterinary industry joined in.
Profit was more important.
Now, the veterinary industry, along with the medical industry, want to lock you into a plan of regular visits, ostensibly as health checks, but in reality to scare you into, very often, unnecessary treatment.
People love their dogs. They are easily frightened about their health and really want to prevent illness. It's a sitting market, easy to manipulate.
The trend of sicker dogs can be changed.
The first thing is to understand what wild dogs eat. This is important because dogs have evolved for millenia on this diet. If it was not suitable, they would have died out long ago.
Dogs are omnivores. Omnivores are basically carnivores, but they can survive on a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Consider wolves. They are mostly static, having adopted a base. However, their prey is not. Their prey, mostly the big herbivores, migrate in winter to better pastures. So they have to survive on what is available - carrion, berries, tubers, small herbivores, The summer time is more about hunting, so is meat based.
Good dog health relies on this diet. It's clean, nutritious, wholesome and toxin free. Changing your dog's diet can bring very quick improvements in health, with better energy, greater happiness as well as ailments disappearing.
Pretty packets of dog food make bold claims. Turn the packet over and read the ingredients. It's scary. Lots on names you don't understand. Lots of chemicals masquerading at nutrients. A long list.
Why not a short list of just meat, bones and vegetables?
Appreciating the need for a species specific and quality diet for your dog will have a hugely beneficial effect on their health. And your wallet. It's far more cost effective.
